Last Sunday our minis section spread out across the county to take part in the Sussex Festival. Each team were a credit to the club, showing off some serious skill, and camaraderie.
Under 7's - Worthing RFC
After some players being unable to attend we played 2 teams with 4 on each team, no subs, so the players absolutely worked their socks off, although you'd never know it as they kept energy high (helped by some half time donuts!).
Caldbec Squad played against Lewes, Chichester, Crowborough and Worthing. They really showed their progression since the beginning of the year and specialised in turning over the ball and using those snake hips to score themselves some quality tries.
Senlac Squad played against Bognor, Haywards Heath, Littlehampton and Worthing. Game play was really impressive, especially with 2 players on their first festival being thrown in to playing 100% of the games. Performance and behaviour was fantastic and they all pulled their weight with no subs. Both teams played some fabulous rugby that was a real joy to watch. We are looking forward to 2 bigger squads at Lewes festival next weekend.
Under 8's - Pulborough RFC
Our two teams travelled out to rural Pulborough for a really well organised festival surrounded by sheep and horse fields to play the first festival in 5 months!
The 'Red' Team have trained very hard for weeks on the run up to the festival, which really paid off. The team started the day against Hove followed by Eastbourne, Burgess Hill and finally a very strong match against Worthing. Coach Ben and Coach Andy said they were amazed by the progress and passing game shown and how united the team were together. The team really applied what had been learned throughout Winter and the support work of players kept the game flowing.
The 'Blue' Team started with a strong match against Bognor, followed by a tough Heathfield, Horsham and ending with a very strong performance against Littlehampton. Coach Terri and Coach Mike were incredibly proud and impressed with the way that the team pulled together, putting training into practice with excellent offloading before being tagged and an impressive amount of sidestepping! Our strongest point of the day was forcing turnovers through successful tagging and pressure on the opposition causing dropped balls, which we rapidly picked up for advantage.
Under 9's - Uckfield RFC
Our Under 9's took 2 teams to Uckfield RFC on Sunday. Coach Chris writes 'Both teams did us proud, showing incredible tenacity in the tackle and great game awareness. We came up against a variety of opposition, and the things that shone through were both teams ability to adapt their style of play to the circumstances, and the true rugby spirit of fair play that is always the hallmark of this group of players.
In the final game, we came up against Littlehampton - who one of our players quipped after the match should really be called 'Bighampton' on account of the size of their players. Despite this, the team were unbowed - putting in tackle after tackle, and proving definitely that 'the bigger they are the harder they fall!'. Great stuff from all the players and we look forward to building on our success at next weeks festival at Lewes.
Under 11's - Eastbourne RFC
A squad of 10 players travelled to Eastbourne for the Sussex festival in a tough group with Lewes, Horsham, Brighton, Haywards Heath and Chichester. An early injury to the quick footed Henry meant the team had to really dig in. Which they did impressively a 4-0 loss to Lewes saw great tackling by Louie, and Harry demonstrated real jackal skills at the breakdowns. Lewis and Dennis were both big runners. Dennis notched up tries vs Haywards Heath and Brighton. Jacob ran the backs well throughout and Brody offered real strength on the ball.
The wins sadly didn’t come with a 3-0 loss to Horsham, 4-1 to Haywards Heath and a nail biting final defeat to Brighton 2-1, but the team showed great spirit throughout. Buster and Edward both showed real strength in the scrum and both carried well and George didn’t take a backwards step throughout
Squad: Lewis, Louie, Dennis, Harry, George, Buster, Edward, Henry, Jacob, Brody
